| This view of Eagle River, outside Anchorage, was taken at Rapids Camp at sunrise in early spring, when the ice on the river was beginning to melt — a time referred to as "breakup" in Alaska. The shadow of the photographer is visible at the far right. The reddish tinge on the hillsides is from the buds of birch tree leaves just beginning to emerge. | ||||||||||
